Which Supplements Support Prostate Health?

The news of former President Joe Biden’s prostate cancer diagnosis has likely increased awareness of prostate health for you or someone you care about. Among the various ways to reduce your risk of cancer and other threats to prostate health, you may be considering over-the-counter supplements. We examine the common issues related to prostate health and then explore herbal supplementation as a means to maintain prostate health.

Common Threats to Prostate Health

Part of the male reproductive system, the prostate gland produces the fluid part of semen that enables sperm to travel through the urethra. The prostate is about the size of a walnut, wraps around the urethra, and is located beneath the bladder.

As most men get older, they may experience health issues with the prostate that can cause sexual problems, urinary incontinence, pelvic pain, and bladder issues. The three most prevalent prostate concerns are

  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH): Enlargement of the prostate due primarily to age
  • Prostate cancer: The most commonly occurring cancer in men
  • Prostatitis: Infection or inflammation of the prostate

Regular prostate checks by your physician are crucial in maintaining your health and preventing problems from becoming severe or life-threatening. Given that experts predict almost 36,000 deaths from prostate cancer in the U.S. in 2025, detecting issues like prostate cancer and other conditions early can lead to more positive health outcomes.

Popular Supplements

Before your next routine prostate exam, there are steps you can take to stay healthy and reduce your risk of prostate-related issues. For instance, many men take supplements, often due to a family history of prostate cancer.

Still, it’s essential to know the benefits and risks of each type of supplement, and a local integrative medicine physician can help weigh the pros and cons. Your provider can also determine if any of your medications will interact negatively with any supplement you’re considering.

Not all supplements provide the same type of health support for your prostate. While some lower the risk of prostate cancer, others might be more helpful in reducing BPH symptoms. Here are some supplements for you to consider:

  • Beta-sitosterol: This supplement is a combination of different plants with cholesterol-like fats called sitosterols or phytosterols. You may want to try this supplement to help strengthen your urine flow. There are no reported side effects, although the long-term impacts have yet to be determined by researchers.
  • Lycopene: A plant chemical found in tomatoes and other bright-red fruits and vegetables, lycopene has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which could be beneficial for men with BPH. Lycopene can also reduce the risk of prostate cancer.
  • Saw palmetto: This shrubby palm is found in the southeastern U.S. The extract from this plant’s fruit may alleviate BPH symptoms, including a weak urine stream or the frequent urge to urinate. Although safe to consume, it might cause a slight headache and stomach upset.
  • Green tea: The epigallocatechin-gallate (EGCG) in green tea may inhibit the development of cancer cells. It also provides anti-inflammatory properties. Three or more cups of green tea per day may provide the most benefit.

As with all dietary supplements, read the ingredients and directions carefully to determine the proper dose. If you have questions or are unsure about whether a supplement is right for you, ask your doctor. You can also consult with a nutrition expert at a local holistic health center on choosing the right supplements and incorporating them into your overall nutrition plan.

Integrative Medical Support for Prostate Health

Always consult your doctor about which supplements are best for you so that you avoid overdosing or interactions with medications. In light of the effectiveness of some supplements, it’s best not to rely on pills alone to meet your nutritional needs and improve your prostate health.
