Small Everyday Changes That Can Transform Your Whole-Body Health

A major change in your self-care routine might be in order, but it can seem overwhelming when you look at everything at once. Instead, set yourself up for success by making minor, manageable adjustments. Whether it’s losing weight or caring better for your heart, little changes to your daily habits can bring significant benefits over time.

At the Blatman Health and Wellness Center, we want to support you on your wellness journey. We encourage you to consult with our integrative health professionals to discuss how best to meet your healthcare goals. In the meantime, here are small changes you can make to your daily routine that will make a significant difference in your health in the long run.

Drink One Glass of Water in the Morning

Suppose you’ve been meaning to consume more water every day. You can give yourself a head start by drinking an eight-ounce glass first thing when you wake up. Even before brushing your teeth or brewing your coffee, start your day with a tall, cold glass of water. It’ll boost your metabolism and help regulate your blood pressure.

Make Small Tweaks to Your Diet

Excellent health starts in the kitchen. If you don’t know where to begin to overhaul your eating, you can take advantage of counseling from a nutrition expert at Blatman Health and Wellness Center. When you’re at home, you can make a minor change to the way you eat or prepare meals. Here are some suggestions:

  • Add an extra vegetable to your scrambled eggs, pasta, soup, or other dishes you routinely prepare.
  • Make your baked goods lighter and healthier by substituting applesauce for shortening, or oil.
  • Prepare one vegetarian meal a week with a recipe from your favorite cookbook or an online search.

Take a 10-Minute Walk

A 30-minute session of moderate to rigorous exercise is excellent for your cardio health, but maybe you’re too busy or don’t feel in shape enough for a half-hour workout. Try just 10 minutes for a walk in your neighborhood or the park. Even small bursts of movement help you reduce stress, improve your blood pressure, boost your cardiovascular endurance, and strengthen your bones and joints. As you get more comfortable, you can build up to 30 minutes at a time.

Even if you have a busy schedule, there are plenty of idle moments when you can get some movement in. For example, do some squats or ab crunches while you wait for your coffee to brew or during a phone call (as long as you’re not distracting others).

Stretch and Breathe

Spend a few minutes each day doing gentle stretching, maybe before lunch or during breaks at work. This can help lower stress and maintain your flexibility. Just five minutes of stretching can also improve blood flow and help you clear your mind for other tasks.

Set a Consistent Bedtime

Getting plenty of restful sleep is just as important for your health as exercise and good nutrition. However, reminding yourself to get 7-9 hours of sleep each night can feel like too much pressure and lead to insomnia. Instead, aim for a consistent bedtime and stick to it, even on weekends and days off. Also, try to wake up at the same time every day. Over time, planning your sleep schedule will make it easier to fall and stay asleep.

Celebrate Small Wins

If you have an ambitious goal, like losing a significant amount of weight, it can feel overwhelming when your goal weight seems a long way off. Instead, break your main goal into smaller, more achievable milestones. For example, if you aim to lose 30 pounds in a year, focus on smaller wins, such as losing half a pound each week. Achieving each milestone will give you that dopamine boost that keeps you motivated.
