Study Finds That Acupressure Can Relieve Breast Cancer Fatigue

A pivotal 2016 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) reported that acupressure can help relieve breast cancer-related fatigue in women patients. More recent research has emerged, adding support to these findings.

What is Acupressure?

Like acupuncture, acupressure is an integrative treatment originating from traditional Chinese medicine. This non-invasive therapy involves placing physical pressure on key points of the body. Unlike acupuncture, acupressure doesn’t use needles.

Numerous studies have demonstrated that acupressure can provide a therapeutic effect in a variety of ailments. Patients have sought acupressure to relieve pain, improve sleep, and regain emotional and psychological balance.

How Does Acupressure Help with Breast Cancer Fatigue?

Among patients with breast cancer, fatigue is a common symptom that can exist long after treatment. More than 90% of cancer patients undergoing treatment report considerable fatigue.

However, acupressure can help with fatigue symptoms. In the JAMA study, 424 breast cancer survivors received acupressure treatment every day for six weeks. At the end of treatment, about 66% of the study participants experienced complete relief of fatigue, while the others had about a 30% reduction in their symptoms.

Researchers continue to study the effects of acupressure on fatigue related to breast cancer. A more recent study found it to be effective in treating patients undergoing chemotherapy, with most results being short-term.

Natural Treatment for Chronic Fatigue

Fatigue isn’t common only among cancer patients. It occurs in a wide variety of illnesses and diseases. The overall therapeutic potential of acupressure in fatigue treatment is compelling.

This is not to say that acupressure should be used as the sole treatment for fatigue. Rather, it can serve as a useful supplement to a more comprehensive regimen that a chronic fatigue doctor develops.
